Clean Air Vehicles Free Parking

The City's pilot program allowing certain alternative fuel vehicles to park for free at City parking meters will be terminated at midnight, February 28, 2009. The following information describes the pilot program that is currently in effect, but which will end at midnight, February 28, 2009.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation has developed a free meter parking pilot program for zero emission, super ultra low emission and certain hybrid vehicles. Drivers of these vehicles may park in DOT-managed on-and off-street metered parking spaces throughout the City of Los Angeles without depositing coins.

LADOT defines zero emission and super ultra low emission vehicles according to standards adopted by the California Air Resources Board. Four hybrid models – the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight and Toyota Prius – are also allowed to participate in the program.

Drivers of zero emission and super ultra low emission vehicles who want to participate in the program must obtain and display a California Clean Air Vehicle Decal from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. At this time, drivers of the four hybrid models mentioned above are not required to display the decals. However, drivers still remain subject to posted parking time limit restrictions and other restrictions, such as tow-away and street cleaning orders.

Effective March 1, 2009, drivers of the alternative fuel vehicles described above will be required to pay to park at City meters or they will be subject to a fine of $48.
