Film Permits
In the City of Los Angeles, film
permit administration is handled by Film
L.A., a non-profit company. Film L.A. issues filming permits
on behalf of many City agencies, including the Los Angeles Department
of Transportation.
Once a production company initiates the
permit application process, Film L.A. coordinates with the necessary
City departments to gain approvals for filming. LADOT works
with the company to address traffic issues created by permits
that propose street or lane closures. LADOT also provides reimbursable
services in support of filming, such as posting of temporary
parking restrictions and traffic signal modifications.

The Department
updated its procedures for approving street closures in support of
filming in January 2010. A streamlined procedure gives pre-approval for:
|
|
|
| |
|
- Certain closures
of arterial streets often used for filming
- One-lane closures on other arterial streets during
non-peak hours
- One-lane closure of local streets and alleys

LADOT’s
"Filming Guidelines"
handbook discusses changes to approval procedures in-depth. Film L.A. will
determine whether specific lane closure permits
are consistent with LADOT’s pre-approvals.
The Office of
the City Administrative Officer requires production companies
to submit evidence of adequate filming insurance before requests
for film permits are approved. The City Administrative Officer’s
Risk
Management Division provides a guide to the City of Los
Angeles insurance
requirements.
