Special Event
Traffic Management
About 2,500 special
events are held in the City of Los Angeles every year. These
events range from fixed gatherings at one site, like block parties
and Dodger baseball games, to moving events that travel along
City streets, such as parades and the Los Angeles Marathon.
 |
Several agencies in the
City oversee special
event approval. While the Los Angeles Department
of Transportation is not one of those agencies, it does
plan for managing special event traffic and street closures.
The Department’s special traffic
operations engineers determine the steps necessary to
manage the event. Some events require only small traffic
and safety measures; others need a Special Event Traffic
Management Plan.

Many
factors are necessary in preparing a successful Special Event
Traffic Management Plan:
|
|
| |
|
- Resolution of issues identified by event
sponsors and affected agencies
- Access to hospitals, churches and schools
is maintained
- Minimized conflicts between event participants
and vehicular traffic

LADOT
field crews, parking enforcement: Traffic control officers
and engineering staff work together to ensure the plan
is followed closely during the event. During larger events,
the Los
Angeles Police Department and the Bureau
of Street Services provide additional services.
