TIPS & FAQ's Traffic Control Devices

  Traffic Signals

Pedestrian traffic signals are provided at all signalized intersections in the City of Los Angeles where pedestrians are allowed to cross.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation studies intersections to calculate required walking times. Intersections used primarily by children or senior citizens have longer crossing times.

Pedestrians must push the pedestrian button at traffic signals in order to change them. The signals should be activated so there is sufficient time to cross the road.

Pedestrians should follow these instructions when crossing at traffic signals:

  • Push the button and wait patiently.
  • After the white walking symbol or “WALK” letters are displayed, watch for moving or turning vehicles before stepping off the curb.
  • Walk between the crosswalk lines.
  • Cross completely before the flashing orange hand or “DON’T WALK” letters appear. Do not begin walking after these symbols appear.
  • Wait at the curb when the steady orange hand or “DON’T WALK” letters appear.
