TIPS & FAQ's Transportation Capital Improvements

Transportation Capital Improvements

Traffic controls are added or modified on the City’s street system in order to meet the short-term circulation needs of the City. Solving the long-term mobility needs of Los Angeles’ ever-growing metropolis is more complex.

These long-term needs require transportation capital improvements to be identified, designed, programmed, funded and constructed.

Transportation capital improvements can include:

  • Street widening
  • Bottleneck elimination
  • Street realignments
  • Smart signal systems
  • Rail transit lines
  • Transit priority projects
  • Transit center stations
  • Off-street parking facilities
  • Streetscape projects
  • Bicycle improvements
  • Pedestrian Enhancements
  • Freeway Related Improvements

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation plays a lead role in developing these projects. LADOT evaluates street segments with current or projected operational problems and develops plans that will provide traffic congestion relief. Department engineering teams design and develop projects to expand its Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control system (ATSAC).

In coordination with Caltrans, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation also plays an important role in planning freeway improvements that positively impact adjacent communities.

LADOT also cooperates with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The two agencies work to develop Metro Rail transit systems.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation also coordinates with the Department of Public Works. LADOT develops designs to provide pedestrian and bicycle improvements.

Funding for these projects comes from a wide variety of City, regional, State and Federal resources. City sources include funds from land developers who must mitigate major traffic impacts surrounding the new construction. There are also State grants available each year.

Most of the Department of Transportation’s capital improvement funds come from a biannual Call-For-Projects program administered by Metro. The City of Los Angeles continuously works to prepare proposals for upcoming competitions.

Metro evaluates projects submitted by all cities in the County. High-priority projects are funded through a matching system.
