Preferential Parking

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation implements and enforces Preferential Parking Districts in residential areas where employees and customers of nearby businesses and attractions regularly park for long periods of times making it difficult for residents to find parking. Preferential Parking Districts restrict parking for all motorists, but area residents and their guests are exempt from the special parking restrictions if they purchase and display Preferential Parking Permits.

Preferential Parking Permits only exempt the vehicle displaying the permit from the parking restrictions on the preferential parking district signs. Permittees must still obey all other parking restrictions (such as red curb zones or street cleaning restrictions).

The following vehicles are also exempt from the special parking restrictions on Preferential Parking District signs:

  • Vehicles displaying a valid Disabled License Plate or Placard issued by California or any other state.
  • A vehicle identified as owned by or operated under contract to a utility, whether privately, municipally or publicly owned, when used in the construction, operation, removal, or repair of utility property or facilities or engaged in authorized work in the designated Preferential Parking District.
  • A vehicle identified as owned by or operated under contract to a governmental agency, when used in the course of official governmental business.

There are three types of Preferential Parking Permits:
