Watts Central Ave Great Streets and Safety Project

LADOT and StreetsLA are hard at work to build safety and travel improvements along Central Avenue in Watts. Central Avenue was designated a Great Street in 2019 as a location that serves the economic and community life of the Watts neighborhood. In 2021, LADOT identified this segment of Central as a priority corridor for the department to deliver transformative safety treatments to prevent crashes that result in serious injury or loss of life. The planned improvements will increase safety and accessibility for all road users.

Some of the upgrades include:

  • sidewalk repair and ADA ramp upgrades
  • bus boarding islands
  • landscaped medians
  • parking-protected bike lane
  • streets trees, and a new crosswalk with pedestrian beacons

We are interested in hearing your feedback on this project. Leave us your thoughts and comments by filling out the survey.

Venice Boulevard Mobility Improvements

Safety upgrades are on their way to Venice Boulevard to better support people walking, biking, and riding transit. The Venice Blvd Mobility Improvement Project will bring new safety improvements from Lincoln Blvd to National Blvd. LADOT is partnering with Metro on this project as Venice Blvd connects multiple neighborhoods, including Palms and Mar Vista, and the Metro 33 bus runs along the corridor.

The project aims to:

  • Improve traffic safety and reduce fatalities and severe injuries caused by car crashes
  • Enhance connectivity to jobs, social services, transit, and community resources
  • Provide alternative modes of transportation (biking, walking, rolling, transit)
  • Improve travel times and reliability for buses along the corridor
  • Offer options to increase access to Metro E-Line

Nearly 47,000 people live within a 5-minute walk of the project area and over half of these residents are people of color. Our research has shown that 1203 collisions occurred on this section of Venice Blvd since 2012. 25% of those involved people walking or riding a bike, and 58 people were killed or severely injured. Our goal with this project is to add active transportation and bus improvements to increase comfort and safety for all who travel on Venice Blvd.
