LADOT Celebrates the Passage of AB43

In order to promote safety on our streets, LADOT recently advocated for state legislation AB43 which gives cities greater authority and setting speed limits. With its passage, cities like Los Angeles will not have to raise speed limits unless engineering changes have been made on these streets with the express purpose of increasing speed limits. This in turn means cities will be able to regulate their street speeds to accommodate for the existing capacity of these streets, while also helping make streets safer throughout the City. Cities with high injury networks will also now have additional discretion to make moderate speed limit decreases to improve safety.

We wish to thank Assemblywoman Laura Friedman who drafted the AB43 bill and Governor Gavin Newsom who signed it. LADOT also wants to thank the Los Angeles City Council for support AB43 by Resolution. The successful passage was also made possible by over 30 community-based advocacy organizations who stood with LADOT in support of Safer Streets include Streets for All, Cal Walks, SAFE, Safe Routes Partnership, NRDC, Vision Zero Network, NACTO, and many more.

Thanks to the hard work of so many, this law will save lives throughout our state.

University Park Slow Jams 2021

University Park Slow Jams 2021

LADOT, in partnership with the University of Southern California, Los Angeles Walks, Public Matters, and USC Kid Watch was a proud participant in the University Park Slow Jams event this past Saturday on October 9, 2021. University Park Slow Jams is a program that built a network of local advocates, including community groups, schools, parents, and youth, to bring awareness and offer solutions to incidents of traffic violence.

Unfortunately, motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for children from ages 5 to 14 in Los Angeles. The University Park and its surrounding community streets are of particular concern with six streets within the area included in the city’s current High Injury Network along with 27 K-12 schools serving more than 14,000 children who use this area's roadways daily. This places the University Park area and its communities as a central concern as LADOT works to protect children and families living and commuting through the area.

University Park Slow Jams included multilingual, visual, and performative street-level activities to draw attention to the issue of street safety in our neighborhoods. By directly engaging with and listening to local knowledge, lived experiences, and expertise of residents LADOT can plan, develop, and implement solutions to serve the most impacted communities.
