Investing in Student Safety As Young Angelenos Return Back-To-School
Student safety is at the top of mind for LADOT as students return to school this week. We worked throughout the summer to develop and install various improvements in school neighborhoods that will make commuting to class much safer and enjoyable. Crossing guards are the first line of safety in protecting students. LADOT has worked diligently to increase the hiring rate of crossing guards, adding 77 crossing guards to the existing crossing guard positions during Fiscal Year for a total of 452 crossing guards on staff to assist students and families get to school safely -- this represents the highest number of crossing guards the City has hired to date.
We’ve also been working on improving traffic safety using “school slow zones” and quick-build projects. Over summer, LADOT installed 15 MPH signs at 45 schools to reduce speeds in school areas. Additionally, LADOT and implemented intersection-tightening projects at 10 schools and 28 schools received speed humps. These proven methods help calm traffic ensure students arrive at school safe and ready to learn.
We will continue to work on improving traffic safety throughout the school year and partner with LAUSD for ongoing traffic safety efforts.
Congratulations Traffic Officer Recruit Class 2023
LADOT would like to congratulate the recruits who successfully completed the training Class. The hiring process started with several thousand city-wide applicants. Through the City's vetting processes (application, testing, interviews, background checks, medicals, etc.) the very best candidates made it into a Class of 27 recruits with 24 successfully completing the training.
The training is comprehensive and rigorous and consists of learning Parking Enforcement laws and procedures as well as actual on-the-job training in 'Traffic Control' in real-world situations on the streets of Los Angeles. This training ensures traffic officers develop the skills and knowledge needed to keep our streets safe and our city thriving. Great job and thank you for your dedication to help keep moving LA forward.
LADOT Brings Play Streets To North Hills
Play Streets popped up in the North Hills neighborhood over the weekend much to the joy of residents of all ages. Thanks to our partner, North Hills Caring Services, one block that normally serves as a place solely for cars was transformed into a safe and enjoyable space for play, relaxation, conversation, and more! Our North Hills partner North Valley Caring Services helped stage the most exciting Play Streets event yet complete with a water park and slides so neighbors could beat the heat as they enjoyed food and connected with community resources.
The Los Angeles Play Streets Program was created with the goal of improving public health, neighborhood safety, and community connections. The program is community-led allowing Angelenos to decide when and where they want to play and then work with us to make it happen. We recognize that safe streets and public spaces play a major role in what creates thriving neighborhoods and look forward to bringing this program to other neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.

CicLAvia Koreatown Meets Hollywood
CicLAvia is opening up streets connecting Koreatown and Hollywood. On August 20th come and enjoy 5 miles of car-free streets. You can walk, run, bike, skate, and use the route however you choose. The route is open to people of all ages and all abilities. Come out and discover local gems and visit the various hubs along the route.
LADOT Requesting Interested RFQ - On-Call Professional Consultant Services
LADOT is in search of qualifying firms that are interested in an opportunity to work with the City of Los Angeles in providing professional consultant services. Services would be on an as-needed basis to support specific task order projects for one or more of fourteen (14) service categories. LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
