Message from LADOT General Manager Laura Rubio Cornejo

Message from LADOT General Manager Laura Rubio-Cornejo:

Happy New Year!

As we head into 2024, LADOT remains committed to serving the city we love with pride and purpose. Each New Year is an opportunity to set intentions and goals for the year to come, and this year LADOT will also adopt a new strategic plan to guide our continued work to provide safe, convenient, and affordable mobility options for all Angelenos. In just a few years, Los Angeles will host both the World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and our charge is to plan and prepare for these events while continuing to deliver and improve the services our communities depend upon every day. I am excited to work across the Department this year to develop a new strategic plan that responds to the demands we face today while also preparing our great city for the future.

Stay tuned on this and other exciting new work over the coming months - we have a lot to look forward to in 2024!

Key Moments, Projects, and Events that Shaped LA's Streets in 2023

Wishing all Angelenos a fantastic New Year! LADOT is looking forward to what's in store for our transit network this year. 2023 was all about teamwork and innovation, supporting the various ways Angelenos travel around town. Here are ten noteworthy events that played a key role in transforming Los Angeles into a more livable and sustainable city:

Img 1 NAACP Sign Installation

1. NAACP Sign Installation
LADOT, in collaboration with Mayor Karen Bass and CD15 Councilmember Tim McOsker, commemorated African American Heritage Month by unveiling the NAACP Square near the LA branch headquarters. The square, located at W 3rd St & W Mesa St in San Pedro, honors the rich history of the Los Angeles NAACP branch, formed in 1914 by Drs. John and Vada Somerville, and highlights their ongoing commitment to addressing racial discrimination and advocating for communities.

2. LA Marathon Crosses The Finish Line
During the 38th LA Marathon, thousands of participants and spectators enjoyed a 26.2-mile route through iconic neighborhoods, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Special Traffic Operations team. Working tirelessly, day and night, they ensured the event's safety and smooth flow of traffic.

3. Endeavour Solid Rocket Motors Arrive in South LA
The arrival of the Endeavour solid rocket motors (SRMs) to the California Science Center brought Angelenos together to witness space history. The components of the two SRMs have an impressive legacy, having been used in 81 space shuttle flights, including 16 of Endeavour's 25 launches. The SRMs will be reunited with Endeavour and displayed in a vertical stack as part of the Science Center's permanent exhibits in the currently-under-construction Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.

4. I-10 Freeway Reopens in DTLA
Under the leadership of Mayor Karen Bass, LADOT worked alongside other regional agencies such as Metro as well as state and federal partners to reopen the I-10 Freeway in just over a week following damage from a pallet yard fire. This tremendous accomplishment helped minimize the disruption of a critical transportation artery and is a testament both to the dedication of our teams and the resilience of our City.

5. Dedicated Bus Only Lanes
In partnership with Metro, LADOT nearly doubled the network of dedicated bus-only lanes in Los Angeles along key corridors of Venice, La Brea, and Sepulveda.

Img 6 Investing in Student Safety

6. Investing in Student Safety
Over the summer, LADOT focused on enhancing safety and enjoyment for students' commutes by hiring more crossing guards and installing safety features at dozens of schools around Los Angeles. The safety treatments include school zone signs that lower the speed limit, quick build intersection-tightening projects, and new speed humps.

7. Electric Vehicle Training at LATTC
LADOT is ensuring that the benefits from the electric vehicle revolution lift up our City's residents by funding training programs at LATTC. The EV training program certifies young technicians in the maintenance and safety of electric vehicles and prepares them for employment in this booming industry.

Img 8 Play Streets8. Play Streets
This year, LADOT's Play Streets program, in partnership with community organizations, activated public spaces in Pico-Union, North Hollywood, Green Meadow, Rampart Village, and South LA. Play Streets empowers residents and community groups to close neighborhood streets to traffic and open them for a day of fun and play for all ages. These events serve as a testament to the endless possibilities of our City streets as well as providing much-needed park space for Angelenos.

Residents in South LA benefited from the UBM "Mobility Wallet," launched by LADOT and Metro in May to provide $150 per month to spend on transportation for 12 months to qualified participants.

10. Arroyo Fest
Arroyo Fest brought tens of thousands of Angelenos together for a day of community, recreation, and nostalgia as they biked, walked, and rode down seven miles of the iconic 110 Freeway, also known as the Arroyo Seco Parkway.
